You’ve done the hard part. You’ve created your business and set up all the pieces. Don’t let the overwhelm of marketing and PR stand in the way of the dream you’re creating.
When I started my business, I felt so intimidated to market myself. First of all, what was I supposed to say about myself? Then, where was I supposed to say it? I’m an extrovert and I started dreading going to networking events. I saw so many people saying things that completely turned me off, and I really didn’t want to make others feel the same way some of these people made me feel.
So, I withdrew. Waiting until I figured out the perfect way to balance small talk with sharing what I do and what it looks like to work with me.
Instead of forcing myself into as many conversations as possible, I busied myself with research and learning. Here’s what I found out.
You will only have the epiphanies and get the confidence you need by doing it. Just like the first day of first grade, the only way you find your friends is by showing up and talking to the other kids.
Allow yourself to step into the awkwardness and embrace it.
Guess what. After you start, you’ll wish you did it earlier.
The hardest part is starting a new habit. When you only make yourself visible once in a while, it’s more difficult and there is more pressure. When it becomes a consistent habit, you can have more peace because while some opportunities may prove better than others, you are on a trajectory of growth.
You’ll find what works best and develop better systems and approaches along the way. The key is getting started and committing to creating a habit of visibility that includes both small and large opportunities on a regular basis.
Ok, if I’ve convinced you to throw yourself out there to learn as quickly as possible what works best for you by having a bunch of conversations, then where are you supposed to do that? There are a million places to market yourself.
As a marketing strategist, here’s a tip. First, figure out exactly who your ideal buyer is, and then find as many podcasts as possible that would interest that person.
Here are a few reasons why I think speaking on other people’s podcasts is the fastest way to grow your business in 2022.
1. Connect with new audiences that you didn’t have to build
2. Get introduced as an expert in your field
3. Grow your brand & thought leadership because you’ve been featured on other shows
4. Generate leads
5. Great SEO
6. Small time commitment
